No one makes the transition from childhood to adulthood in one great leap. It is a process filled with hard lessons and work. For some, independence comes sooner than they are prepared to deal with. It can be a scary and lonely time. At Pathways, we're giving young adults who are homeless or living in out-of-home care the chance to develop the life skills they need to be successful.
Your support is important to our youth, and now there are new ways that you can help Ozanam's Pathways Program! Join our Facebook group at www.facebook.com and also visit iDonate to learn how many of your in-kind donations can benefit our homeless youth.
The Pathways Program operates scattered-site apartments in Kansas City and Wichita. It serves young men and women, as well as young parents with children. When a client enters the program, Pathways locates a suitable apartment, pays the rent and takes care of other expenses provided the young men and women are committed to completing the program successfully and building a savings account for their future.
When a new resident enters the program, they meet with a counselor to set goals and determine their current level of personal need. Pathways staff place them in one of the scattered site apartments Ozanam operates throughout Kansas City or Wichita and work with them to set job and educational goals. We balance teaching and guiding residents with the realities of independence, which allows them to truly experience their own life choices. The ultimate goal of Pathways is a culmination of independence, integrity, self-sufficiency and character.

The Living Expense Assessment Program "LEAP" is designed for residents to experience the financial realities of independent living while establishing a "nest egg" for their financial fitness. Residents are expected to pay rent each month. They will learn and put into practice the budgeting and money management concepts of "real life". These payments are then put into their monitored personal savings account.
Community-Based Life Skills Classes offer residents a "hands on" approach and a community support network. Companies such as United Parcel Service, Westin Crown Center Hotels, Firstar and Consumer credit Counseling add "real life" scenarios to "The Other 16 Hours" program curriculum.
